INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Hand drawn and full of energy, this animation brings choreography of Connor Price & Nice D's "Gasoline" to life. I wanted to shift the focus away from the typical typographic style of lyric videos, and instead bring dance into the limelight. A big thank you to LZB Locking for letting me use their choreo to enable my vision.

ROTOSCOPING

By using Photoshop's timeline, I was able to draw directly over the reference video and create a very natural sense of motion. The video was downsampled to 24fps, and then every other frame skipped for a manageable 12fps animation.

STYLE

The art direction was inspired by an animated outro sequence from the anime Jujutsu Kaisen. Bold but simple colours are paired with a messy, hand sketched style to give the animation a constantly dynamic feel.

Taking after that, I purposefully coloured my frames roughly and with little thought, adding painterly streaks of movement to my smear frames. The text was added and synced afterwards, using an AfterEffects scribble plugin to match the tone of the drawings.

REFLECTION

REFLECTION

Time consuming but rewarding. This project was a refreshing break from keyframes and velocity graphs. With rotoscoping firmly on my toolbelt, it will be interesting to experiment with other types of video overlay animations in the future.
